What Is Shipping Protection? How It Works for Online Stores

How does shipping protection work?
Shipping protection adds one line to the checkout: a toggle or checkbox that covers the order against loss, theft, and damage for a small fee. Here is the full journey:
- The shopper adds protection. The price is usually based on order value and destination. RapidXO clients average $1.89 to $1.95 per order.
- The order ships as normal. Nothing changes in packing, carriers, or fulfillment.
- Something goes wrong. The carrier loses the parcel, it's stolen from the porch, or it arrives broken.
- The shopper files a claim online. Tracking and order details are checked.
- The claim is resolved. The shopper gets a replacement or a refund. With Rapid Protect, most claims resolve in 5 to 7 business days.
What does shipping protection cover?
Coverage varies by provider, but most plans cover three problems:
- Lost in transit: the carrier never delivers the package.
- Stolen after delivery: tracking says delivered, but the package is gone. This is porch piracy, and carriers generally don't pay for it.
- Damaged in transit: the item arrives broken or unusable.
Plans also set a coverage limit per shipment. Rapid Protect covers domestic and international orders up to $5,000 per shipment. Always check the policy terms for limits and exclusions.

Who pays for shipping protection?
In most setups the shopper pays, as an optional line item at checkout. Where the money goes next depends on the model behind the app:
| Model | Who pays claims | What the store earns |
|---|---|---|
| Self-funded | The store | The fees, minus every claim it pays |
| Insured (typical) | An insurer | Usually nothing |
| Insured with revenue share (Rapid Protect) | An insurer (Navigators and The Hartford) | Margin on every protected order |
The difference matters. A self-funded app can look profitable until a bad month of claims. A typical insured app removes that risk but turns protection into a pure cost-pass-through. We cover the trade-offs in insured vs self-funded shipping protection.
Is shipping protection the same as shipping insurance?
Not always. "Shipping insurance" usually means a policy backed by a licensed insurer. "Shipping protection" is a broader term: some protection apps are insured, and some are funded by the merchant, who simply promises to replace lost orders. If a provider says "protection," ask who pays the claims. Rapid Protect is an insured product, underwritten by Navigators and The Hartford.
Doesn't the carrier already cover lost packages?
Only partly. Carriers include limited liability by default, and the shipper has to file the claim. Coverage above the default must be bought per package, and claims can take weeks. Most importantly, once tracking shows "delivered," a stolen package is generally not the carrier's problem. Shipping protection fills those gaps and moves the claim from your support team to the customer and the provider.

Why stores offer shipping protection
- Package theft is common. A 2025 SafeWise survey estimated 104.3 million packages were stolen from US households in 12 months, and 31% of Americans had a package stolen.
- Fewer support tickets. Customers file claims themselves instead of emailing your team.
- No more eating the cost. Without protection, the store usually pays to reship.
- A new revenue line. With the right model, protection earns money. Revitol.com earned over $70,000 a year in net protection revenue on 120,000 orders.
