Shipping Protection vs Shipping Insurance: The Difference

The short version
| Shipping insurance | Shipping protection | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An insurance policy covering the shipment | A checkout add-on promising to make lost, stolen, or damaged orders right |
| Who pays claims | A licensed insurer | Either an insurer or the store, depending on the provider |
| Who usually buys it | The shipper, per package or by policy | The shopper, as an optional fee at checkout |
| Theft after delivery | Depends on the policy | Usually covered |
What is shipping insurance?
Shipping insurance is coverage underwritten by an insurance company. Examples include declared-value coverage bought from a carrier, third-party parcel insurance, and insured checkout programs. Because an insurer pays the claims, a bad month of losses doesn't land on the store's margin.
What is shipping protection?
"Shipping protection" is a marketing term more than a legal one. It describes the customer-facing product: a toggle at checkout that covers the order. Behind it there are two very different models:
- Insured protection: the provider places the risk with an insurer. Rapid Protect works this way, underwritten by Navigators and The Hartford.
- Self-funded protection: the store collects the fees and pays every claim itself. It can be profitable, but the store carries all the risk.
We compare the two models in detail in insured vs self-funded shipping protection.

How to tell which one you're buying
- Ask who pays claims. An insurer, or you?
- Ask for the underwriter's name. Insured programs can name the insurance company.
- Ask what happens in a bad month. If claims exceed fees, who covers the gap?
- Ask about revenue. Does the store keep any of the fee, and how much after claims?
- Ask who handles claims. The customer, the provider, or your support team?
Which is right for your store?
- You want no claim risk: choose an insured program.
- You want revenue from protection: choose a program that shares it.
- You want both: look for insured protection with a revenue share. That's the model Rapid Protect uses: Revitol.com earned over $70,000 a year and HealthBuy.com $125,000 a year in net protection revenue.

Insured protection that still pays your store
Rapid Protect is underwritten by Navigators and The Hartford, covers up to $5,000 per shipment, and shares revenue on every protected order.

Is shipping protection the same as shipping insurance?
Not always. Shipping insurance is backed by a licensed insurer. Shipping protection is a broader term that can be insured or funded by the store itself.
Who pays shipping protection claims?
It depends on the provider. With insured protection an insurer pays; with self-funded protection the store pays out of the fees it collects.
Is Rapid Protect insurance?
Yes. Rapid Protect is an insured product, underwritten by Navigators and The Hartford.
Which is better for a store, protection or insurance?
If you want no claim risk, choose insured coverage. If you also want revenue, choose an insured program that shares revenue, like Rapid Protect.
What should I ask a shipping protection provider?
Who pays claims, who the underwriter is, what happens if claims exceed fees, how much revenue the store keeps, and who handles claims.
